Ingredients
For the Sandwich:
2 slices of thick white bread (preferably slightly toasted)
2 slices of ham
2 slices of roast beef (or steak)
2 slices of cheese (typically Edam or Gruyère)
1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
For the Francesinha Sauce:
1 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup beer (light beer or Portuguese lager)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon hot sauce (adjust to taste)
1 garlic clove (minced)
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
Execution
Prepare the Sandwich:
-Lay one slice of bread on a plate. Top it with a slice of ham, a slice of roast beef (or steak), and a slice of cheese.
-Place the second slice of bread on top to form a sandwich. Repeat this with the second sandwich.
Cook the Sandwich:
-Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt the butter and place the sandwich in the pan.
-Cook each side for about 3–4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. You can also grill the sandwich if you prefer a more uniform crispiness.
Make the Francesinha Sauce:
-In a saucepan, combine tomato sauce, beer, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, hot sauce, minced garlic, and smoked paprika. Stir to combine.
-Simmer the sauce over low heat for 10-15 minutes, letting the flavors meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Assemble the Francesinha:
–Once the sandwiches are golden and crispy, place them on a baking tray.
–Pour the Francesinha sauce generously over the top of each sandwich, making sure it’s completely covered.
–Add another slice of cheese on top of each sandwich, then place the tray under the broiler for 2–3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve and Enjoy:
Remove the sandwiches from the oven and serve hot. Francesinha is typically served with a side of French fries or salad.
Additional tips
- Meat Choices: Traditionally, roast beef and ham are used, but you can switch things up by using sausages, grilled chicken, or even pulled pork.
- Spice Level: For a spicier sauce, add more hot sauce or even a pinch of chili flakes. If you prefer a milder version, reduce the hot sauce.
- Vegetarian Version: You can make a vegetarian Francesinha by substituting the meat with grilled vegetables or veggie patties.
- Extra Sauce: The sauce is the star of the show, so feel free to make extra for dipping fries or adding to the plate.
- Garnishes: Top your Francesinha with a fried egg for an added touch, a classic Portuguese way to elevate the dish.
