Ingredients
1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or panko for extra crunch)
1/4 cup grated carrot (optional for extra texture)
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 egg (or flax egg for vegan)
2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)
Burger buns and toppings of your choice (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.)
Execution
Mash the Black Beans
In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until most of the beans are broken down but still leave some texture for a satisfying bite.
Mix the Ingredients
Add the breadcrumbs, grated carrot (if using), chopped onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
Bind the Mixture
Add the egg (or flax egg if vegan) to the black bean mixture and stir until it holds together. If the mixture feels too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs until the consistency is firm but not too dry.
Shape the Patties
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into patties about 1/2 inch thick. Make sure they are firm and compact.
Cook the Burgers
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the black bean patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and crispy on the outside and heated through.
Assemble the Burgers
Toast your burger buns and assemble the burgers with your favorite toppings. Classic choices include lettuce, tomato, red onion, and avocado, but feel free to get creative with sauces and extras like guacamole, vegan mayo, or even grilled pineapple!
Additional tips
- Make it Spicy: Add a diced jalapeño to the mixture for extra heat, or top with spicy salsa or chipotle mayo.
- Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and serve on gluten-free buns.
- Batch and Freeze: Make a double batch and freeze the uncooked patties. They’ll be ready for a quick weeknight meal anytime you need it!
- Grill-Friendly: If grilling, brush the patties lightly with olive oil and cook on medium heat to prevent sticking.
